My lovely dog Toby will be 8 yrs old soon. We love him very much, and I like to think that we provide him with a warm and supportive home. However he doesn't seem to be able to spend time by himself - barking and causing all sorts when we leave him by himself. I've tried so many things, but it's still as bad as before. Can anyone tell me how I might find out what's going on? I feel that if I could just find out what he's thinking, then perhaps we can do something about it.

what he´s probably thinking is that you are part of his pack/family and thus he doesn´t understand why you leave him behind.
Best way to make him not feel too excited about you leaving is, if you don´t make a fuss about it either.
This means, when you are about to leave...don´t go over to him and pet him, don´t give him a treat, don´t talk to him, don´t even look at him, just calmly leave. This signals to him that it´s not a big deal that you are leaving and thus nothing to get excited about. I know it´s this is hard because us humans want to say good bye and give affection...but in dog world somthing behaviour like that will only increase the dogs feeling that something bad is about to happen.
So be tough so he doesn´t need to worry...If you and your wife stik to quietly leaving teh house without paying him attention, he will eventually get the message and settle down.
