| As well as various academic studies achieved, Louise has well over 30 years practical “hands on” experience in different species, and various animal related fields, training and disciplines. Experience in the dog-training world, includes domestic, commercial and competition fields (to the highest level,) in several disciplines as a competitor, instructor & facilitator.
In the equine world, Louise has experience as both a rider and competitor within various disciplines, including instructor, steward, & judging experience. Other animal related experience includes, kennel work (including kennel management, staff & animal training,) stable management and equine schooling/training in various disciplines and volunteering at animal clinics for both small and large animals in underprivileged/disadvantaged areas during the troubled 1980’s and 90’s.
Involved in education (“prevent a bite” programmes) in the previously disadvantaged areas, at school/pre-school levels for many years, Louise also assists in education and training within the SA Pony Club organisation, and has recently developed a “Working Dogs” course (with an accompanying test) for the children. She regularly presents talks all over the country on animal behaviour, training & pet care. A recent project is to offers practical training courses from her Benoni premises, to aid in producing competent dog training instructors. For many years, Louise was involved with animal assisted human therapy, using horses, dogs, and various other species of animals. Louise is still involved with various groups in an advisory capacity and as an temperament evaluator. Louise has worked closely with various animal welfare organisations for nearly 30 years, & gives pro bona behavioural advice & assistance to the animal welfare organisations in her area whenever she can.
Another project that is underway is a programme called Ed-U-Paws where Louise and her staff perform educational demonstrations with their dogs to educate young people through visiting church and school groups with a view to teaching and educating young people about animals through fun demonstrations and games.
Louise was one of the first competent trainers, to run non-confrontational, “early education,” puppy learning groups, & has tirelessly campaigned against the use of cruelty/punishment and force, (including eliminating – and outlawing in her school - the corrective use of choker chains) as a method of dog training, and cruelty or force in training for all species of animals in animal training. Involved in the traditional dog training clubs for many years before she breaking away in the late 1990’s, to begin a new concept in dog and animal training. She was also in private practice as an accredited animal behaviour consultant for many years before taking this step. Accredited as a practising full-time professional animal behaviourist in 1995, Louise served for many years on the Committee of the Animal Behaviour Consultants of SA (©®™) (the registering body of SA behaviourists) as Secretary, and is still an active, accredited member.
Louise regularly publishes booklets and articles on behaviour modification, training and pet care, (available on order) and is in the process of completing her first book, “Discover Your Puppy’s Paws Abilities” which is a practical, no nonsense guide to choosing and raising the perfect puppy. A second book “Discover Your Rescue Dog’s Paws Abilities” is underway and will be released soon.
Often heard on the airways, Louise is a regular guest on Cape Talk Radio and Talk Radio 702 for over a decade. Over weekends Louise runs a busy dog training school, and gives agility and dog jumping classes a couple of evenings a week. From Monday to Friday, Louise runs a “behaviour modification” practice at her smallholding in Benoni for problem pets and their owners. (Strictly by appointment only)
Louise is a full time, practising, Accredited Animal Behaviour Consultant & Professional Dog Trainer.
Accredited in 1996 with the Animal Behaviour Consultants of SA (©®™). She possesses a Certificate of Companion Animal Behaviour (Faculty of Veterinary Science, Department of Ethology, University of Pretoria) and has completed a Certificate of Advanced Companion Animal Behaviour (Pretoria Technikon) She is also a member of
(SAADOI) the SA Association of Dog Obedience Instructors and various other overseas “like” organisations.
